Costume Contest Rules
How do I enter the World Costume Showcase contest?
In order to participate, each contestant must thoroughly fill out the Registration Form below.
Does my costume have to be original or handmade, or can I buy one?
As the judging criteria for this contest is based on craftsmanship, all costumes entered in the contest are required to be handmade. It is okay to buy parts for your costume, just as long as you assembled it. Going to a Cosplay website or party store and buying the set for that particular character is not allowed.
Is it okay if my costume is commissioned?
Models are allowed at the competition. It would be best if the artist accompany the model at Prejudging to explain how the costume was made. Models for the costume contest, unless noted prior, will be awarded the prize. It is up to both the artist that was commissioned and the model to decide where the prize is awarded.
Does my costume have to be strictly Anime related?
No. Video game characters, western characters, movie characters, original characters etc. all allowed.
Will I have to play as my character?
Judging for this contest will be based purely on the craftsmanship of the costume. Getting “in-character”, although is nice; will no longer affect your score. Therefore, no skits or performances are allowed for both judging and the show.
What if I already won an award with this costume at another convention?
Your costume is still eligible for this competition. However, if you have already been awarded a prize in a past FreeCon, you may not appear in this contest with it. You are still welcome to bring in a new costume.
So how does the contest work?
Prejudging will begin prior to the actual World Costume Showcase show. Contestants will be asked questions about their costume for a few minutes. After all the contestants have been prejudged, the judges will come to a conclusion on the winners of each category. After the prejudging, Contestants are expected to stand up on stage for the World Costume Showcase show, strike a pose, take a photo, and leave. Contestants who win the contest will be invited to join the Skull Squadron in a small skit performance.

Since FreeCon 8 is a public event held on an academic campus, there are some conduct policies we must enforce.
Do I have to dress up?
Although Cosplay is encouraged, it is not a requirement to attend this convention. You can still stay festive while at the convention. FreeCon 8 shirts, Florida State University shirts, or anything relevant to comic book/anime/nerd culture are welcome. Just be sure you show up wearing something!
Dieselpunk? The City of Tomorrow? Captain FreeCon Polly and the Skull Squadron?
Yes, the theme of FreeCon 8 is “Dieselpunk”, which is a derivative of the popular “Steampunk” genre. Take a step back in time to the 1940s, and you got what we’re going for! Top hats, pinstripe suits and ties, military garb, and sharp fashion styles are encouraged at FreeCon 8!
What can’t I wear?
Keep all costumes family friendly, no more explicit than PG-13. For characters exposing midriffs and other skin must be kept as beach appropriate. Don’t embarrass yourself by showing too much skin!
Can I bring weapons?
As this is a campus run convention, bringing weapons is strongly discouraged, unless it is essential to the costume. Live steel weapons, like at most conventions, are not allowed, and any projectile weapons with moving parts are also not allowed. All gun replicas are required to have the standard orange tip. Any replica weapons must be presented to FSUPD. Horseplay with weapons will not be tolerated, and violators will be escorted off the site.
Will people be taking photos?
Although we have staff photographers in designated areas, expect other con-goers to take photos of you. Although there are Florida laws to protect your privacy, we are not responsible what happens to photos taken at our convention. Photos are always fun, but make sure that you don’t wear something you don’t want someone taking a picture of you in.
Should I bring shoes?
Of course! Safety is first priority. Be sure you don’t show up barefooted, and that long dresses, wigs, or helmets don't obscure your right to be safe at our convention! We are not responsible for any injuries that happen at our convention, so use your best judgment.
What about Public Display of Affection?
Since we are a family-friendly, campus-run convention, please avoid any kind of Public Display of Affection, for your safety, and the safety of others.
Is there anything else I am not allowed to do?
Even though we encourage all con-goers to have fun at our event, we strongly discourage disruptive behavior. “Trolling” will not be tolerated. There is to be no glomping, planking, free hugs, yelling “The Game”, signs/banners (unless they are pivotal to the costume), or Vuvuzelas. Also keep a tolerable scent, and take showers every night. Don’t bring strong perfumes or colognes either. With that said, make sure your behavior is mature and appropriate for a college-run convention. Violators will be given a long stare, pointed out, embarassed, and then escorted off the site, with police action if necessary. Don't let this happen to you.
